Heavy metals in surface sediments of lake patria wetland, southern Italy, and environmental risk

The study investigated the presence of heavy metals in the surface sediments of one of the most important wetlands in south Italy, Lake Patria, and the related environmental risk. Surface sediments were analyzed for particle size and shape, total organic carbon and As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn levels. Mean total organic carbon was high, 3.1 %, with a peak of 5.9 % near the input of freshwater channel whereas sediments appeared to be mainly composed of sand and/or gravel and significantly polluted by metals especially Cr, Cu and Zn. Data from heavy metals spatial distribution, Pearson correlation, principal component analysis and geochemical indices suggested dominant anthropogenic source for most metals. Mean Igeo values of Cr, Cu and Ni were in the range of 4.6–7.3 of strongly polluted class while their relative mean enrichment factors were largely exceeding the threshold of the anthropic pollution, 1.5. A very high pollution situation was also outlined when considering the Cf indices, with Cr, Cu and Ni possessing mean values from an order of magnitude of ten to hundred times higher the very high polluted class, 6 ≤ Cf. On the overall, the integrated indices of modified contamination degree, pollution load and ecological risk revealed a serious pollution scenario. The mean comprehensive ecological hazard index was fivefold the most critical limit, ≥600, in almost all the lagoon and especially in the locations close to channel.

Contamination and Spatial Distribution of Metal(loid)s in the Stream Sediment near the Greenhouse

As greenhouse horticulture continues to increase in South Korea, the effects of metal(loid)s from wastewater discharges on stream sediments were analyzed. A total of 106 samples were analyzed for cadmium (Cd), boron (B), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), and iron (Fe). The coefficient of variation (CV) of the metal(loid)s components was 96.58% for Mn, 93.40 for Zn, 62.47 for B, 58.90 for Pb, and 58.14 for Cd, suggesting anthropogenic sources. Correlation analysis suggested a cumulative source for Cd-Zn and B, and cluster analysis suggested an anthropogenic source for Cu, Pb, B, and Mn. The contamination factor (CF) suggested the need to trace the source of contamination to Pb (3.21 ± 1.89) and B (1.33 ± 0.83) and EF to Pb (3.30 ± 1.81) and B (1.44 ± 0.94). The analytical results identify anthropogenic sources of Pb, B, and Cd. The high contamination of Cd suggests the influence of mining areas, and Pb suggests the influence of traffic, fertilizers, pesticides, and fossil fuels in greenhouses, in addition to the influence of mines. B confirmed the impact of the facility’s vegetable wastewater and suggested the need to further examine the cumulative impact of Mn, Fe, etc. By utilizing the facility horticulture wastewater for ecological restoration and other agricultural uses, we aim to prevent stream sediment pollution and realize a sustainable agricultural environment.

Controlling effects of terrestrial organic matter on metal contamination and toxicity risks in port sediments

The contents of metals, total carbon, total nitrogen (TN), total organic carbon (TOC), and stable isotope composition (δ13Corg and δ15N) of sediment organic matter (SOM) were investigated to explore the sources and spatial distribution of metals and SOM in the surface sediments (Kaohsiung Port, Taiwan). Results showed that TOC and metals in estuarine sediments are high, gradually decreasing toward the port entrances. The δ13Corg, δ15N, and TOC/TN ratios indicate that SOM comes mainly from terrestrial sources. This study proposes a befitting model between metal pollution and toxicity risk index and SOM sources in port sediments by combining stable isotope composition, correlation matrix, and multiple linear regression analysis. The model indicates that the degree of metal pollution and toxicity risk in sediments are mainly affected by TOCterr content and SOM source. The results help to understand the influence of organic matter sources in port sediments on metal concentration distribution.

A geostatistical analysis of multiscale metallicity variations in galaxies – III. Spatial resolution and data quality limits

ABSTRACT Geostatistical methods are powerful tools for understanding the spatial structure of the metallicity distribution of galaxies, and enable construction of accurate predictive models of the 2D metallicity distribution. However, so far these methods have only been applied to very high spatial resolution metallicity maps, leaving it uncertain if they will work on lower quality data. In this study, we apply geostatistical techniques to high-resolution spectroscopic maps of three local galaxies convolved to eight different spatial resolutions ranging from ∼40 pc to ∼1 kpc per pixel. We fit a geostatistical model to the data at all resolutions, and find that for metallicity maps where small-scale structure is visible by eye (with ≳10 resolution elements per Re), all parameters, including the metallicity correlation scale, can be recovered accurately. At all resolutions tested, we find that point metallicity predictions from such a geostatistical model outperform a circularly symmetric metallicity gradient model. We also explore dependence on the number of data points, and find that N ≳ 100 spatially resolved metallicity values are sufficient to train a geostatistical model that yields more accurate metallicity predictions than a radial gradient model. Finally, we investigate the potential detrimental effects of having spaxels smaller than an individual H ii region by repeating our analysis with metallicities integrated over H ii regions. We see that spaxel-based measurements have more noise, as expected, but the underlying spatial metallicity distribution can be recovered regardless of whether spaxels or integrated regions are used.

Evaluation of metal pollution characteristics using water and moss in the Luanchuan molybdenum mining area, China.

Luanchuan is rich in molybdenum resources, and mining activities are frequent, but over-mining can cause serious metal pollution to the local environment. To explore the degree of metal pollution caused by mining activities, the content characteristics and spatial distribution of metals in mining areas were studied by measuring the concentrations of Fe, Mn, Zn, Ba, Mo, Cu, Cr, Co, V, and W in surface water and mosses of mining areas. In addition, the metal pollution index (HPI), contamination factor (CF), and pollution load index (PLI) were used to evaluate metal pollution, and factor analysis was used to analyze the sources of metals. The results of the analysis of surface water at the mine site indicate the most abundant element in surface water, with a maximum concentration of 3713.8 μg/L, and its content far exceeds the water quality standard of Class III of the Environmental Quality Standard for Surface Water. The results of the HPI analysis showed that nearly 90% of the surface water was moderately contaminated (HPI ≥ 15). The results of the analysis of atmospheric deposition at the mine site confirm that the metal elements with a high threat to the atmospheric environment are Mo and W. The results of PLI indicate that the level of atmospheric deposition pollution in the study area is severe (PLI > 4). Factor analysis indicated that rock weathering and mining activities were the main sources of metals. This study provides a theoretical basis for the investigation and control of metal pollution in similar metal mining areas.

An in-depth view of the metallicity distribution of the small magellanic cloud

ABSTRACT The spatial metallicity distribution of star clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) has recently been found to correlate as a V-shaped function with the semimajor axis of an elliptical framework proposed to assume a projected galaxy flattening. We report results on the impact that the use of such a framework can produce on our understanding of the SMC formation and its chemical enrichment. We show that clusters with similar semimajor axes are placed at very different distances from the SMC centre. The recently claimed bimodal metallicity distribution of clusters projected on the innermost SMC regions and the V-shaped metallicity gradient fade away when actual distances are used. Although a large dispersion prevails, clusters older than ∼1 Gyr exhibit a shallow metallicity gradient, caused by slightly different spatial distributions of clusters younger and older than ∼4 Gyr; the former being more centrally concentrated and having a mean metallicity ([Fe/H]) ∼ 0.15 dex more metal rich than that of older clusters. This metallicity gradient does not show any dependence with the position angle, except for clusters placed beyond 11 kpc, which are located in the eastern side of the galaxy.

Heavy metals in the bottom sediments of the Sasyk estuary

Purpose. The main aim of research is to study the bottom sediments of the Sasyk estuary, in particular, to establish their lithological characteristics and the peculiarities of the distribution of heavy metals in their layers. Method. The research was done with the results of the expedition work carried out in 2018-2019, 31 samples of the bottom sediments of the Sasyk estuary, channels and paleochannels of the Kogylnyk and Sarata rivers, and rocks of the shoreline of the studied reservoir were selected. We carried out sampling along the network of 31 stations from a motor boat using a bottom-grab and orientation by GPS navigation. The content of heavy metals was determined using geochemical spectral emission analysis. Statistical and cartographic processing of the research results was carried out using geographic information systems Mapinfo, QGIS, Global Mapper and Surfer. Also, to establish the possible routes of metal migration, we used the analysis of mesotopolineaments formed according to the NASA SRTM digital terrain model, with the construction of rose diagrams of the main directions of the lineaments. The results. We established that the bottom sediments were represented mainly by grey-black, black, viscous silt, often with an admixture of shell detritus. Less often, they were composed of sand, sometimes muddy with abundant fauna. We also determined the content of heavy metals in the system of bottom sediments, features of their distribution and possible ways of infusing. Thus, in the territory of the Sasyk estuary, heavy metals of the first (Pb), second (Ni, Cu, Cr, Mo) and third (V, Mn, Ba) hazard class are found in high concentrations. The average content of Pb for the bottom sediment system of the estuary is: for sand – 32 mg/kg, for silt – 41 mg/kg. The maximum content for both is 100 mg/kg. The average Ni content is: for sand – 27 mg/kg, for silt – 62 mg/kg. The maximum content for sand is 80 mg/kg, for silt – 100 mg/kg. The average Cu content in the silt of the Sasyk estuary is 81 mg/kg, and 26 mg/kg in the sand. An elevated content of Mn, Ba and Mo was also found in several samples. Оften areas with increased concentrations of metals have a point character. In almost all cases, they are connected to the river systems adjacent to the pond. The distribution of some metals is correlated with the main directions of estuary water circulation. Wastewater is a likely sources of metals entering the estuary geoecosystem. We also assume that the migration of these elements to the pond may occur through tectonic blocks. Scientific novelty. For the first time in recent years, we have carried out expeditionary work on research of the bottom sediments of the Sasyk estuary, along the complete network of the station. We obtained the data on the gross content of heavy metals, and determined their average, maximum and minimum concentrations. For the first time, maps of the spatial distribution of metals were constructed, which made it possible to establish the main regularities of their accumulation in the bottom sediment system of the pond. Practical significance. Pollution of the bottom sediments of the Sasyk estuary with heavy metals is one of the components of today's critical ecological state of the pond, which affects the well-being of the residents of the surrounding areas. The obtained results can be used at the state level to create effective programs for quality management of the resource potential of the estuary.

Screening of new native metallophytes from copper abandoned mining site: Promising tool for phytoremediation

AbstractA field survey on abandoned mining site ‘Bir Nehass‐Morocco’ was conducted to identify new native metallophytes as a promising tool for phytoremediation. The spatial distribution of metals in tailings and mining soils was investigated and metal accumulation in plant tissues was analyzed and compared. The results indicated that the studied area was polluted by Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd Cadmium with maximum values of 2892, 27868.3, 6982 and 63.03 mg.kg−1, respectively, which are higher than background levels for agricultural soils. The concentrations of Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd decreased with the distance from the mine tailings. Thirteen species (11 families) were identified and mainly native and therophyte plants. Significant difference (p < 0.05) was observed among the average concentrations of metals in plant tissues and most values exceeded the normal concentration range. Based on the comparative analysis of heavy metals content, translocation and bioconcentration factors in plants, Aizoon canariense L, Hirschfeldia incana (L.) L. Fossat, Citrullus colocynthis (L.) Schrader and Peganum harmala L had a high accumulation ability and showed a remarkable phytoremediation potential which could be identified as promising candidates for phytoremediation techniques.

Study of geochemical features of soils on the territory of an abandoned coal mining area using geoinformation technologies.

The article describes the results of a study of the geochemical features of soils on the territory of an abandoned mining area. The Kizel coal basin (Russia) is of particular interest for studying the consequences of technogenic and post-technogenic transformation of the natural environment. The study of the soil as a deposit medium made it possible to identify geochemical indicators of the negative impact. Such a detailed study of the distribution of chemical elements in this area was conducted for the first time. Geoinformation system and maps with interpolation were created to study the spatial distribution of metals and metalloids in soils. Umbric Retisols Abruptic and Haplic Retisols Abruptic soils are common in the territory. Sampling for geochemical testing was carried out from two horizons: humus and podzolic. Sampling from two depths made it possible to identify elements that continue to be contaminated at the time of the study. A total of 103 sample plots were established in the study area. The results obtained were compared with the background of the natural region of the Western Urals to identify the contribution of technogenesis. As a result, the coefficients of concentration and dispersion of chemical elements were calculated. Due to this, elements were identified, the accumulation of which occurs on the territory of the Kizelovsky coal basin. To identify the current and accumulated pollution, the ratio between the humus and podzolic horizons was calculated. As a result, it was found that at the moment in the humus horizon in some areas there is a high accumulation of Co, Mn, Ni and Sr. The geochemical series of the territory for the humus and podzolic horizons was obtained: Fe > Ti > Mn > Sr > Cr > V > Zn > Ni > Co > Pb > As. Data on the geochemical specificity of the territory of the Kizel coal basin have been obtained. The created geoinformation database reflects the physical and chemical properties of soils, metals and metalloids content, dispersion and accumulation coefficients, coefficients of the ratio of the humus and podzolic horizon. Based on it, it is possible to obtain data on the geochemical features of the territory, geoecological characteristics, spatial distribution of metals and metalloids and identification of pollution sources. Co (24 ± 2.8mg/kg), Mn (1100 ± 155mg/kg), Ni (69 ± 9.3mg/kg), As (10 ± 3.5mg/kg), Cr (178 ± 20mg/kg), Zn (80 ± 7.8mg/kg) and Sr (221 ± 26mg/kg) accumulate in the humus horizon. Co (24 ± 1.8mg/kg), Mn (1000 ± 103mg/kg), Ni (60 ± 6.4mg/kg) and Cr (153 ± 15.2mg/kg) accumulate in the podzolic horizon.

Contents of Metals in Sediments and Macrophytes Differed between the Locations in an Alpine Lake Revealing Human Impacts—A Case Study of Lake Bohinj (Slovenia)

Metals stored in sediments of lakes can bioaccumulate through the food chain, posing a risk to the environment and human health. Alpine lakes are supposed to be less affected by pollution than lowland lakes and are vulnerable to any changes and impacts in their catchment areas because of their remote position and ultra-oligotrophic character. Therefore, we used a model Alpine lake, Bohinj (in the Triglav National Park, Julian Alps, Slovenia), to evaluate the load of metals in the abiotic and biotic compartments of the ecosystem, in order to assess the spatial distribution of metals, and finally, to determine whether past and present human activities in the lake’s catchment area may be causing pollution. To this aim, the contents of Cu, Pb, Cr, Cd, Co, Mn, Fe, Zn, Hg and Ni in the sediment, water, and macrophyte samples were determined. The results showed that the average content of some toxic elements, especially in the sediments (Cd 0.52 mg/kg; Hg 0.03 mg/kg) and plants (Co 0.71 mg/kg; Cr 5.88 mg/kg) was elevated compared to natural background values. High Hg contents could be connected with natural geological sources, while other elements were probably of anthropogenic origin. High levels of all elements in the eastern part of the lake indicated long-term pollution, which could be a consequence of past iron extraction and military activities in the vicinity. On the other hand, high contents of elements in the water suggests that intensive touristic activities in the area may cause temporal pollution in the summer. The study sheds light on complicated processes governing the distribution of trace metals in Alpine lakes.

Spatial Distribution and Pollution Level of Heavy Metals in Street Dust of the City of Suwałki (Poland).

This paper presents an analysis of the content and spatial distribution of heavy metals (HM) in street dust in Suwałki, a city located in northeastern Poland. The HM content of street dust was also evaluated using the geochemical index (Igeo), enrichment factor (EF), and contamination factor (CF), and local HM sources were identified using chemometric methods. The arithmetic averages of HM contents in dust arranged in the following order: Fe > Zn > Mn > Cu > Cr > Ni > Pb, were 11,692.80, 215.97, 194.78, 142.84, 63.59, 17.50, 17.04 mg∙kg-1, respectively. Higher values than the local background occurred for Cr, Cu, Ni, Zn and Pb. The values of Igeo, CF, and EF indicate that the highest pollution in dust is due to Zn and Cu. The spatial distribution of metals was evaluated using maps of HM content in road dust samples from Suwałki. The spatial distribution of HM showed areas with high contents of Cr, Cu, Ni, Zn and Pb located mainly in the central and eastern parts of the city. In these areas, high traffic volume, the presence of shopping centers, administrative buildings and bus stops dominate. Statistical models of multivariate analysis (FA) and cluster analysis (CA) identified two sources of HM. The first source of pollution was associated with local industrial activity and motor vehicle travel, and the second with natural sources.

Groundwater Quality Assessment in Korba Coalfield Region, India: An Integrated Approach of GIS and Heavy Metal Pollution Index (HPI) Model

The goal of this study was to examine the water quality for drinking and domestic purposes in the Korba coalfield region of Chhattisgarh, India. The Korba Coalfield region has seen the collection of fifteen groundwater samples from different places. The content of eight metals was determined using ICP-MS instruments: aluminum (Al), barium (Ba), cadmium (Cd), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mn), lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn). Spatial distribution maps were produced using GIS software to make it simple to understand the groundwater’s quality. The groundwater samples were collected during the pre-monsoon season and the amount of Al, Ba, Cd, Fe, Mn, Pb, Ni, and Zn exceeded the ideal drinking water standards in a few sites. The elevated metal concentrations in the study region’s groundwater could be hazardous to the quality of water. The HPI value based on mean concentration was calculated to be 21.64, which is significantly lower than the reference pollutant index score of 100. The HPI calculation revealed that 73.33% of groundwater samples had low HPI values, 6.67% had medium HPI values, and the remaining 20% had high HPI values. The correlation between heavy metals and HPI was calculated; HPI is positively correlated with Fe (r > 0.9471), Pb (r > 0.9666), and Zn (r > 0.9634), indicating that these elements contribute significantly more to heavy metal concentration in the various samples examined than the other selected elements. The box plot seems to be a graphical representation of the outcomes of the different parameter concentrations which show the mean, maximum, and minimum metal values. The cluster analysis was performed and it was classified into two clusters. Cluster-1 comprises 14 members (93.33%) of the water samples examined and is distinguished by relatively low Ba (<700 μg.L-1), pH, TDS, Al, Fe, Cd, Mn, Pb, and Zn concentrations. Cluster-II is made up of 1 member (6.67%), which is primarily made up of groundwater samples (GW-10) taken in the KCF region, India. High values of HPI are found in the eastern portion of Chhattisgarh’s KCF region, reflecting the spatial distribution of metals. Heavy metal leaching from open-pit mining and transit routes was observed to have contaminated groundwater in the eastern section of the research region.

Joint Estimation of Metal Density and Attenuation Maps with Pencil Beam XFET.

X-ray fluorescence emission tomography (XFET) is an emerging imaging modality that images the spatial distribution of metal without requiring biochemical modification or radioactivity. This work investigates the joint estimation of metal and attenuation maps with a pencil-beam XFET system that allows for direct metal measurement in the absence of attenuation. Using singular value decomposition on a simplified imaging model, we show that reconstructing metal and attenuation voxels far from the detector is an ill-conditioned problem. Using simulated data, we develop and compare two image reconstruction methods for joint estimation. The first method alternates between updating the attenuation map with a separable paraboloidal surrogates algorithm and updating the metal map with a closed-form solution. The second method performs simultaneous joint estimation with conjugate gradients based on a linearized imaging model. The alternating approach outperforms the linearized approach for iron and gold numerical phantom reconstructions. Reconstructing an (8 cm)3 object containing gold concentrations of 5 mg/cm3 and an unknown beam attenuation map using the alternating approach yields an accurate gold map (NRMSE = 0.19) and attenuation map (NRMSE = 0.14). This simulation demonstrates an accurate joint reconstruction of metal and attenuation maps, from emission data, without previous knowledge of any attenuation map.

Cadmium mobility and health risk assessment in the soil-rice-human system using in vitro biaccessibility and in vivo bioavailability assay: Two year field experiment

Humans are mainly exposed to cadmium (Cd) due to the rice consumption, however there exist considerable differences across rice cultivars in terms of Cd absorption and accumulation in the grains, and subsequent release after digestion (bioaccessibility), as well as uptake by Caco-2 cells of humans (bioavailability). This study comprised of field and lab simulation trials where in the field, firstly 39 mid-rice cultivars were screened for their phytoremediation potential coupled with safe production in relation to uptake and translocation of Cd. Lower Cd concentrations (˂0.2 mg kg−1) in polished rice of 74 % cultivars were ascribed to the increased root to straw translocation indicating that straw may acquire higher accumulation of Cd. Furthermore, the ionomic profile demonstrated that the spatial distribution of metals in different rice organs corresponds to the plant growth morphology. In the second year, in vitro-in vivo assay model was employed to assess the bioaccessibility and bioavailability of Cd in polished rice and to further estimate the daily Cd intake by humans through rice grains. The results of bioaccessibility and bioavailability assays and daily estimated Cd intake presented the corresponding values of 39.02–59.76 %, 8.69–24.26 %, and 0.0185–0.9713 μg kg−1 body weight day−1, respectively. There exists a strong connection between total Cd and bioaccessible Cd to humans (R2 = 0.94, P < 0.01). Polynomial fitting (R2 = 0.91, P < 0.01) showed a better statistically significant correlation between total Cd contents and bioavailable levels, suggesting that in vitro-in vivo assays should be considered in future studies. The results of field experiments and in vitro-in vivo assays recommended the Tianyouhuazhan (MR-29), Heliangyou1hao (MR-17), and Yongyou15 (MR-1) as suitable mid-rice cultivars for the phytoremediation of slightly Cd contaminated soils coupled with rice agro-production due to their high nutritional value and low total and bioavailable Cd for human.

Controllable hierarchical self-assembly: systematic study forming metallosupramolecular frameworks on the basis of helical beta-oligoamides.

Self-assembly is a key guiding principle for the design of complex nanostructures. Substituted beta oligoamides offer versatile building blocks that can have inherent folding characteristics, offering geometrically defined functionalities that can specifically bind and assemble with predefined morphological characteristics. In this work hierarchical self-assembly is implemented based on metal coordinating helical beta-oligoamides crosslinked with transition metals selected for their favourable coordination geometries, Fe2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Co2+, Zn2+, and two metalates, MoO42-, and WO42-. The oligoamide Ac-β3Aβ3Vβ3S-αHαHαH-β3Aβ3Vβ3A (3H) was designed to allow crosslinking via three distinct faces of the helical unit, with a possibility of forming three dimensional framework structures. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) confirmed the formation of specific morphologies that differ characteristically with each metal. X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results reveal that the metal centres can be reduced in the final structures, confirming strong chemical interaction. Time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) confirmed the spatial distribution of metals within the self-assembled networks, also revealing molecular fragments that confirm coordination to histidine and carboxyl moieties. The metalates MoO42- and WO42- were also able to induce the formation of specific superstructure morphologies. It was observed that assembly with either of nickel, copper, and molybdate form thin films, while cobalt, zinc, and tungstate produced specific three dimensional networks of oligoamides. Iron was found to form both a thin film and a complex hierarchical assembly with the 3H simultaneously. The design of the 3H substituted beta oligoamide to readily form metallosupramolecular frameworks was demonstrated with a range of metals and metalates with a degree of control over layer thicknesses as a function of the metal/metalate. The results validate and broaden the metallosupramolecular framework concept and establish a platform technology for the design of functional thin layer materials.

Characterization of the spatial distribution of metals and profile of metalloprotein complexes in a mouse model of repetitive mild traumatic brain injury.

Metal dyshomeostasis is a well-established consequence of neurodegenerative diseases and traumatic brain injury. While the significance of metals continues to be uncovered in many neurological disorders, their implication in repetitive mild traumatic brain injury remains uncharted. To address this gap, we characterized the spatial distribution of metal levels (iron, zinc, and copper) using laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, the profile of metal-binding proteins via size exclusion chromatography-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry and the expression of the major iron storing protein ferritin via western blotting. Using a mouse model of repetitive mild traumatic brain injury, 3-month-old male and female C57Bl6 mice received one or five impacts (48h apart). At 1 month following 5× TBI (traumatic brain injury), iron and ferritin levels were significantly elevated in the contralateral cortex. There was a trend toward increased iron levels in the entire contralateral hemisphere and a reduction in contralateral cortical iron-binding proteins following 1× TBI. No major changes in zinc levels were seen in both hemispheres following 5× or 1× TBI, although there was a reduction in ipsilateral zinc-binding proteins following 5× TBI and a contralateral increase in zinc-binding proteins following 1× TBI. Copper levels were significantly increased in both hemispheres following 5× TBI, without changes in copper-binding proteins. This study shows for the first time that repetitive mild TBI (r-mTBI) leads to metal dyshomeostasis, highlighting its potential involvement in promoting neurodegeneration, which provides a rationale for examining the benefit of metal-targeting drugs, which have shown promising results in neurodegenerative conditions and single TBI, but have yet to be tested following r-mTBI.

Using a Two-Stage Scheme to Map Toxic Metal Distributions Based on GF-5 Satellite Hyperspectral Images at a Northern Chinese Opencast Coal Mine

Toxic metals have attracted great concern worldwide due to their toxicity and slow decomposition. Although metal concentrations can be accurately obtained with chemical methods, it is difficult to map metal distributions on a large scale due to their inherently low efficiency and high cost. Moreover, chemical analysis methods easily lead to secondary contamination. To address these issues, 110 topsoil samples were collected using a soil sampler, and positions for each sample were surveyed using a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receiver from a coal mine in northern China. Then, the metal contents were surveyed in a laboratory via a portable X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) device, and GaoFen-5 (GF-5) satellite hyperspectral images were used to retrieve the spectra of the soil samples. Furthermore, a Savitzky–Golay (SG) filter and continuous wavelet transform (CWT) were selected to smooth and enhance the soil reflectance. Competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) and Boruta algorithms were utilized to identify the feature bands. The optimum two-stage method, consisting of the random forest (RF) and ordinary kriging (OK) methods, was used to infer the metal concentrations. The following outcomes were achieved. Firstly, both zinc (Zn) (68.07 mg/kg) and nickel (Ni) (26.61 mg/kg) surpassed the regional background value (Zn: 48.60 mg/kg, Ni: 19.5 mg/kg). Secondly, the optimum model of RF, combined with the OK (RFOK) method, with a relatively higher coefficient of determination (R2) (R2 = 0.60 for Zn, R2 = 0.30 for Ni), a lower root-mean-square error (RMSE) (RMSE = 12.45 mg/kg for Zn, RMSE = 3.97 mg/kg for Ni), and a lower mean absolute error (MAE) (MAE = 9.47 mg/kg for Zn, MAE = 3.31mg/kg for Ni), outperformed the other four models, including the RF, OK, inverse distance weighted (IDW) method, and the optimum model of RF combined with IDW (RFIDW) method in estimating soil Zn and Ni contents, respectively. Thirdly, the distribution of soil Zn and Ni concentrations obtained from the best-predicted method and the GF-5 satellite hyperspectral images was in line with the actual conditions. This scheme proves that satellite hyperspectral images can be used to directly estimate metal distributions, and the present study provides a scientific base for mapping heavy metal spatial distribution on a relatively large scale.

Application of individual and integrated pollution indices of trace elements to evaluate the noise barrier impact on the soil environment in Wrocław (Poland)

Trace elements emitted by road transport cause long-term contamination of road soils. This study showed the effect of the noise barrier on the spatial distribution of metals in soils at the City Centre Ring Road in Wrocław (Poland). Samples were taken along the barrier every 150 m and across the screen at distances of 0.5, 2.5, 5 (only on the left side), 10, 20, and 50 m from the noise screen on both sides of road no. 5. The contamination of soils was assessed with the use of commonly used individual pollution indices, integrated pollution indices based on the PI index or metal concentrations, and a potential ecological risk index (RI). The geoaccumulation index (Igeo) and the single pollution index (PI) indicate moderate contamination of soils by Cu, Pb, and Zn at most measuring points. The significant risk was reported from Cd in all samples. Integrated pollution indices, especially the PI_Nemerow, PI_avg, and RI confirm the poor quality of studied soils. The presence of elements in soil is related to anthropogenic factors. The spatial distribution of pollution indices and results of statistical analysis (HCA) indicate that Cr and Ni are of natural origin. Remaining elements (Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn) are of mixed origin with a large share from car transport (the significant Spearman’s correlation coefficients). In the case of cadmium, dendograms suggest the existence of an additional anthropogenic source, which is also confirmed by moderately strong correlations of this element with other metals.

Accumulation of Heavy Metals in Bottom Sediment and Their Migration in the Water Ecosystem of Kapshagay Reservoir in Kazakhstan

The bottom sediment of reservoirs has many functions. Among them, matter sorption is a very important one, and results in many side-effects on the reservoir sediment forming the water–bottom sediment system. As a result, bottom sediment can also be an indicator of anthropogenic water pollution. There is only very little knowledge of this situation in the study area. The main objective was the analysis of heavy metal accumulation in bottom sediment, as well as their ability to migrate throughout the water–bottom sediment system and their spatial distribution in the Kapshagay Reservoir in Kazakhstan. Heavy metal concentrations, in the both water samples and the bottom sediment, were determined using the atomic absorption spectrophotometric method. Surfer software was used to visualize the processes of migration and accumulation. Another objective was the development of model maps of the spatial distribution of metals in the reservoir water area, which indicated significant anthropogenic loads. It is obvious that both the transboundary inflow of the Ili River and the inflow from small rivers in the territory of Kazakhstan are the reasons for the anthropogenic water and sediment load. The results of the spectrometric analysis verify the water pollution in the reservoir, revealing increased concentrations of zinc reaching up to 10.8 µg/L and lead up to 32.7 µg/L, transported by the transboundary runoff of the Ili River and by the small rivers on the left bank into the Kapshagay Reservoir. Sediment concentrations close to the central part and dam zone of the reservoir reached the following values: zinc up to 37.0 mg/kg and lead up to 8.8 mg/kg. The results of this study indicate a significant anthropogenic load of the ecological conditions of the Kapshagay Reservoir. This is discussed and compared with other relevant studies.
